ONPAR Middle School Math and Science
This project created and investigated tech-based, classroom-embedded performance assessment tasks in science and mathematics, and developed scoring algorithms to provide individualized diagnostic detail for students with low English proficiency.
Students received individually tailored diagnostic feedback on their progress, and teachers received training in integrating the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and Common Core State Standards for mathematics (CCSS), and in interpreting classroom summary diagnostic reports designed to guide differentiated instruction.
The project methodology, called ONPAR, used multi-semiotic techniques and novel item types to measure more complex concepts and skills accessible to the broadest range of students. The approaches to classroom assessment and automated scoring developed in this project were refined in subsequent projects and now form the basis of our current research.
