Elementary and Middle School Math Items

This study, funded in 2007, focused on developing and investigating a new approach to assessing the mathematics achievement of 4th- and 7th-grade students with Learning Disabilities and other disadvantaged students, using text-heavy assessments.

Built on earlier research into accessible science assessment items for students with low English proficiency, this project investigated how interactive computer technology could be used to construct assessment items in elementary and middle school mathematics that would allow students disadvantaged by text-heavy contexts to show their mathematical abilities.

Lessons learned from this project informed our later research on accessible assessment for all students and eventually led to a set of ONPAR middle school assessment tasks in proportional reasoning and geometry.
