Middle School Science Testlets

This project researched and developed a set of interactive computer-based performance assessments for middle school science with automated scoring and reporting, designed to more fairly assess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of students disadvantaged by text-heavy assessments.

Built on earlier research into accessible assessments for students with low English proficiency and learning disabilities, this project extended the approach beyond standalone items and item sets to complete performance tests. The project was updated from Flash to HTML5 and JavaScript.

Lessons learned from this project were used to inform our ongoing research into accessible assessment for all students, and laid the foundation for more sophisticated approaches to scoring and reporting developed in later research projects.

Tutorial

*The sample testlet tutorials included here were developed for informational, not operational, purposes. Tutorials for use with operational ONPAR tasks incorporate item examples distinct from those on the live test and combine narrated video demonstrations with instructions that prompt test takers to practice interacting with key task features and onscreen support.
